Essential Oils that Repel Insects, Bugs and Other Pests

Anytime is bug/pest time in the South, but Summertime is just naturally worse with the heat and humidity.

Today's blog is a simple list of which essential oils work best for certain pests.

While certain pests are a necessary and useful part of our existence, you don't really want them in your homes and being a nuisance while you're trying to have some quality family or quiet time outside. They also spread germs and disease while they're visiting.

Also, some are downright dangerous and even deadly, such as a black widow or brown recluse spider.

Always use caution and wear gloves when moving rocks and working in your yard. I've had some close calls with scorpions and black widows lately.

Essential Oils are a safe and chemical free way to keep your home, yard and garden as pest free as possible. Use caution around cats, their nervous system doesn't handle Essential Oils well.

Here's my list.

Ticks - Lavender, Lemongrass, Thyme, Cilantro, Lemon, Lime, Melaleuca, Citronella, Pine
Black Widow Spiders - Oregano
Scorpions - Basil
Spiders in general - Peppermint, SN Nature Blend
Plant lice - Peppermint
Moths- Lavender, Peppermint, SN Nature Blend
Mosquitoes - SN Nature Blend, Lavender, Lemongrass
Gnats - SN Nature Blend
Flies - SN Nature Blend, Lavender Peppermint, Rosemary
Fleas - SN Nature Blend, Lavender, Lemongrass, Peppermint
Cutworms - Thyme
Chiggers(redbugs) - SN Nature Blend, Lavender, Lemongrass, Thyme
Beetles - SN Nature Blend, Peppermint, Thyme
Aphids - Peppermint
Ants - SN Nature Blend, Peppermint, Rosemary
Roaches - Cypress, Peppermint

This is a broad list, you can try any of these individually or as a blend. As always, you need to see what works best for you.

Method of application depends on where you'll be using these. If a spray would work best, for instance outside or on your plants, try a few drops of each oil in a 2 ounce spray bottle filled with water. If you're making a spray to apply to people, you could use Witch Hazel or Aloe Vera juice in place of the water. You can also just put the oils on cotton balls and place around the home if the problem is inside.

If you're using the SN Nature Blend, you can also just put a spray top on the bottle and use it straight, especially for a "people spray."

The Spark Naturals Nature Blend consists of the following oils:

Lemon
Eucalyptus
Citronella
Lemongrass
Other oils that are unnamed

Here's another tip for keeping birds off the side mirrors of your vehicles.

I have some Summertime Mint Cooling Spray made up for hot weather activities. It contains Peppermint, Spearmint, Lavender and Eucalyptus. Just on a hunch, I sprayed it all around the windows on my vehicle to see if it would keep the birds from fighting themselves in my side mirrors. I don't mind them playing, but I do mind the streams of bird poop they leave down the doors.

I haven't seen any since I sprayed a few days ago.
