you know...
the day you simply have to strip the beds and wash the linens.
It's always a good idea to freshen the mattress and even the pillows while the laundry is being done.
Baking Soda and Essential Oil Mattress Freshener
Baking Soda, Lavender & White Fir |
I use a simple mix of baking soda with a few drops of Essential Oil. For one pint of baking soda, I add 8-10 drops each of Lavender and White Fir. The Lavender makes your bed smell so wonderful and helps to relax you when you finally get to crawl back in it! The baking soda will absorb any odors that linger in the mattress and pillows. I add the White Fir simply because I love the smell and it gives me a peaceful feeling.
I measure a pint of baking soda in a bowl first and add the oils to get the oils blended in the baking soda thoroughly and then I just fill the jar.
You can use any kind of lid with holes in it, these little plastic shaker lids are great and also the flower lids that you see in the picture. You just have to shake daintily(obviously that's a word, no spell check alert), because the holes are larger in the flower lids.
Herb jar lid |
These little shaker lids that come on the little 4 ounce Mason dry herb jars are also super cool.
They can be used on any size regular mouth jar and they have a snap lid that you can close over the shaker part. You can find them at WalMart in the canning supplies and you can buy them online at ACE Hardware.
Love these little dry herb jars. |
I keep this mixed up in a jar and when I take the sheets off the bed, I just sprinkle the mattress generously. Some people recommend leaving the mixture for an hour or so and then using the attachment of your vacuum cleaner to vacuum up the excess.
I prefer to just sprinkle over the mattress and then take my hand and sort of brush it all over the bed evenly. Some of it may brush off onto the floor, but it just helps to deodorize there too. I don't vacuum the excess, I just leave it where it is, it's under the sheets so it doesn't hurt and you get the benefits of the soda and Lavender much longer. You never feel it under there, trust me, if you could I would know it. I'm one of those people who can't sleep if there's a wrinkle in my sheet and if there's something to be felt, I'll feel it.
Don't forget the pillows!
They need a good freshening also.
If it's a nice sunshiny day, you might lay them outside or hang them on the clothesline for some sunshine freshening too!
Other Essential Oils to freshen with!
If you don't like Lavender, just use whatever you like.
I wouldn't use an oil however, that perks you up, you need a relaxing oil or blend for this. Here's my list of the top ten oils for relaxation.

Sounds so comfort inducing I worked in a nursing care facility that sprinkled a patient's pillow so they could work for relaxing and going to sleep
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome thing, I wish more medical facilities used the oils.
